Recently I read an article about changes we all want to make, and how we have high hopes for that "one day". You'll hear statements like "'One day' I'm going to afford a Ferrari". "'One day' I'm going to be my own boss". "'One day' I'll stand up to my mother-in-law". These thoughts give us a cheery feeling, a purpose, and a sense of a better tomorrow. It's great to have them around really, but the catch is, tomorrow is not always so far away from the present. After a while you'll notice tomorrow is dawning on you and you don't have anything to show for it. It's like when you were younger and you were asked "What do you want to do when you grow up?" Suddenly you find yourself all grown up and still have a load of things to tick off your bucket list.
So here's the simple remedy the article recommended:
1: Clear all distractions, Turn off your TV, radio and phone. Lock your door and go to a quiet place.
2: Get a pen and paper and set your timer for twenty minutes.
3: Write down one hundred things you want to do, careers you want to have, people you always wanted to meet, places you wanted to visit. Write whatever comes on your mind.
4: Work quickly. Don't give it a second thought, just write. This will turn off your inner editor thats telling you you're not going to achieve it or you can't do it. Just don't stop until that timer goes off.
Ding! The timer goes off, Get up and leave without looking back or revising your list. Leave it alone for a day and go about your day. The following day, sit down and look at your list, how much of these are accomplishable? Did anything unusual come out in your hurried attempt to jot down those one hundred items in the time limit?
Personally after looking back at my list, I found that, while some of them were really difficult long-term goals, most of them were simpler more attainable goals. So I had an idea. I divided my list into two subgroups: A) Long-term goals and B) Short-term goals. That way while I'm off busting my ass for the longer term ones on those gray unfruitful days, I'll have the success of my short-term goals to give me additional motivation. Victory right?
